The tattoo removal is more effective if the time of energy transfer is shorter. The beam of intense light penetrates fair skin easily but it is completely absorbed in pigments (dark spots) and it can interact with pigment-containing cells.
Melanin and dark tattoo inks can absorb this laser light. Laser has different effect on different tattoo inks. The laser beam breaks up double bonds in some inks or fragments it (the pigment cells heat up and burst). The phagocytes can access the pigment cells and remove these small fragments of tattoo pigments with the help of macrophages and the pigment cells will be carried away through the lymphatic system.
The time duration of the laser energy is very short so the tattoo pigment is heated to fragmentation temperature before its heat can dissipate so the surrounding skin area will not get damaged.
